Day 12

Italy 2010

Day 12

Seeing the news concerning other places helps us cope with a little rain on our vacation. It rained briefly on Day 12 in the morning (first time on the whole trip), but we went out for a walk to shop for food at the bakery, the vegetable and fruit market, and the butcher – all individual shops. It turns out the foods at each are the best because each specializes, and by the lines of people waiting for their turn, they are obviously successful. Getting around in the rain doesn’t keep the bike riders home as many come to work in the city – leastwise they’re not on their cell phones.

The rain let up, and we rented bikes and rode on the tree-lined path that is on top of the wall. This three-mile-around wall is continuous with no stops.

After all the good food we’ve eaten, we came across a weight scale. Instead of walking, waddling may be the next way of getting around. Look at that gut!! Che Macello!!!

The food is just too good. The latest was a pizza with smoked ham and cheese topped with arugula. The crust was thin and so tasty. When you pick up the pizza to eat it, you fold it in half and then eat it. Thin crusts should mean less calories, right? We were told about this place (Mara Meo) by a semi-local man who comes here to be treated for his Parkinson’s Disease naturally with no drugs.
Since we like to search out places that are frequented mostly by locals, we were eager to try it. We finally found it, but it looked so small and no one was sitting outside in front. We walked in anyway, and it was amazing. A waitress ushered us through to the outside of the inside.... a large space in the back!!! There were only Italians filling the tables, and the menu was only in Italian. Communicating was a big challenge since our waitress spoke not one word of English. We did eventually get our order placed, and the pizza was SO GOOD and inexpensive. Of course, there was a pitcher of red house wine that complemented this amazing meal.

  1. Oh Bob - that picture of you on the scale is priceless. Great sense of humor. Only a man would do that! Us women would deny and hide! lol Cathy
